Alumni

The Edinburgh University Swimming and Water Polo Club was established in 1887, and is one of the oldest clubs of its kind in Britain. The club currently boasts an impressive 130 members across two sports and eight teams, and continues to go from strength to strength. The club began with around seventy competitive members, and within a few decades of its existence it was regarded as one of the best clubs in Scotland, winning all inter-university matches. Springboard diving also came into being in the 30s, and members would travel to Portabello or Rosyth to train as there were no diving facilities in Dalry or Warrender baths where they were based. Unfortunately this aspect of the club has not survived, but the other two disciplines have thrived and after over a century of hard work have now gained a threatening reputation - most recently placing 3rd in BUCS Short Course competition and Women's polo BUCS finals, the men close behind in 4th place nationwide.

Every year we hold an annual alumni weekend, where past members are encouraged to return to Edinburgh to challenge the current swimmers. It is a great way of getting back in touch with the club and always ends up being fantastic fun. In 2013 we marked our 125th anniversary on the 16th March with an informal day of races and matches followed in the evening by a dinner and ceilidh at the Carlton Hotel, and were thrilled to see members who graduated as far back as the 60s return to celebrate with us - with almost seventy almuni in attendance!

Similarly, don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any historical information or interesting stories about the club! Rest assured that the no-hands-dessert rule is still going strong...

Look out for our semesterly newsletter too! If you have not received one, get in touch with josefbudde@gmail.com to get added to the mailing list to hear about important club news and events!
