2013/2014 Round Up Feb 2014

This term has been highly successful for the Swimming and Water Polo Club. The 1st Swimming Team has enjoyed yet another unbeaten season, and has therefore qualified for the BUCS Team Championship Finals in March. The team has finished second to the might of Loughborough in this competition for the past few years, and will be hoping to build on these results this year. The 2nd Swimming Team will also join the 1st team at this competition; they will compete in the Trophy Division for the first time in the clubs history after enjoying a season with only one defeat to Stirling.

The Men’s Water Polo 1st team have had an unbeaten season so far, meaning they finished top of the BUCS Premier North Division and qualify for BUCS semi-finals by virtue of a bye. New additions to an already well-built, experienced team have been the difference this year. Players such as Solon Nicolaou, Jono Davies and Michael Houghton have given the squad some much-needed depth, and the men have a really chance at BUCS glory later on in the season.
The Women’s Water Polo 1st team have had a similarly impressive season. After losing a few senior members from the 2013 BUCS winning team, the addition of Scottish Junior and Senior capped players Alison Thomson and Louise Fox has breathed new life into this team hoping to emulate the successes from last year. The team has only had one defeat this season, losing 5-3 to league champions Loughborough and will be looking to seek revenge later in the competition.
Both the men’s and women’s 2nd Water Polo Teams made it into the quarter-finals in the BUCS Trophy competition but unfortunately lost out to strong opposition in Northumbria and Durham 1st teams. However, the women remain in a strong position in the Scottish 1A league, currently placed 2nd to Dundee. The men are currently placed 3rd in their respective league.

As many teams have some respite from the league fixtures over the next few weeks, it gives the squads hours of training time during what has been dubbed “fitness February” to prepare for the semi-finals and finals weekends coming up in March.
